Inspire Series: Think Before You Shoot with Leah Gray

Think before you Shoot,

Before you leave the house with your camera do you prepare? What should you bring with you? Do you calculate the time of day and the tides, or do you wing it, and head for your favourite bird photography location? What sort of preparation should a photographer do?  What do you think about before capturing an image? Do you get analysis paralysis? Do you worry about equipment? Does your creative side get lost, or do you get lost without a plan?

This presentation will take you through several different genres of photography from landscapes to portraits. Find the freedom to photograph your subject by preparing beforehand. Some things are best prepared long in advance, and others take just a few minutes.

About Leah Gray

FCAPA, PPSA, EFIAP, SPSA 

is a Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) certified judge as well as a Photography Society of America (PSA) judge. In 2025, she became a curator for the Canadian entry of the World Photographic Cup. Leah Gray has accumulated over 1100 acceptances for her images in International Photography Exhibitions including 21 gold medals and 5 Best in Show awards. She earned her EFIAP designation in 2026.

In 2018, Leah earned a gold medal and the Best-in-Show distinction at the year-end PSA Nature and Wildlife division, surpassing all other gold medal winners internationally that year.  She has two portfolios accepted into the PSA (bronze and silver).

Interests range from wildlife and landscape photography to sports, travel, macro, tabletop, studio, and creative images. Leah teaches photography with her partner Steve Smith at Panorama Recreation Centre. Her website is Spirithills.ca
